Neighbors said those experiencing homelessness are causing problems in an Oklahoma park.Now, police are involved, but local advocates said it’s not as easy as just running off the people camping there. The Homeless Alliance said they were just notified of the homeless camps in the park by the city on Tuesday.Earlier on Wednesday, Oklahoma City police were back telling those camping that they needed to leave.”We work with the VA, mental health providers like hope community services, so all of these providers doing different street outreach throughout the community,” said Meghan Mueller, associative executive director of Homeless Alliance.The Homeless Alliance said they’re busy working with other agencies to find the best approach to help people who have set up camp in Dolese Park. Neighbors have filled social media with complaints about trash fires on park property, but the Homeless Alliance said the key is helping the people living there.”As a community, you know we’re thinking about who has better repour. Is there a provider that knows someone camping in a specific area? So, we really try to be strategic about how we address street outreach,” Mueller said.A team will meet with the people to try to find them a better solution and needed resources.”Trying to get folks to engage with our day shelter, which offers meals and hot showers, to talking to people about permanent housing options,” Mueller said.If you have worries about an encampment near you, you can contact the Homeless Outreach team with OKC police.
