WITH some of the most breathtaking roads that the UK has to offer, incredible mountains to hike, golden beaches to stroll on and remarkable history to explore, Scotland is an epic place to road trip.
When you hire a campervan in Scotland, you have endless routes to explore. And there are plenty of choices, perfect for those that love a challenging adventure or for those simply looking for a relaxing break.

There’s something for everyone to enjoy and a place to park up that suits every kind of adventurer too.
Ed Bassett, UK General Manager of campervan and motorhome rental specialists Camptoo, has tried most of them all and has come up with his six best campsites in Scotland, whether you want to set up for the night on a beach, a family friendly site or need one which will welcome your four-legged friend.
And he’s rated Camusdarach by Morar, as the best beach-side place to stay a night or two. Located in one of the most scenic parts of the Highlands, with great views over the island of Eigg, Rum and Skye, this is an excellent stop.
It has easy access, via a footpath, through sand dunes to three beautiful white sandy beaches – commonly known as the Silver Sands of Morar – which regularly feature in the list of top ten beaches in Europe! Camusdarach is the beach featured in the film Local Hero.
It’s a water lover’s paradise. Pitches are suited to both campervans and motorhomes, with some even including electric hook-up. Free Wi-Fi is an added bonus too! You can expect a little more luxury here, with immaculate toilet blocks, and washing/drying areas.

Another great beachside location is Ardnamurchan Camp Site, situated on the shoreline on Loch Sunart, to the west of Kilchoan, this campsite is the ideal place to explore West Ardnamurchan.
It has pristine beaches, tranquil coves and miles of unspoilt wildlife reserve to explore. It has beautifully scenery to open your campervan doors to in the morning and some of the pitches are located down on the foreshore, where they waves fill the rockpools.
Thanks to its sloping nature, everyone can soak up the incredible view. Dogs are welcome and free WiFi is available in parts of the campsite. It’s worth noting that it is not suitable for motorhomes though!
When it comes to family-friendly campsites in Scotland, Ed rates Comrie Croft, near Crieff in Perthshire, as the best. Set on a 230-acre estate, it is suitable for small to medium campervans up to six metres.

With options to bike, walk and eat all available from the site, there really isn’t much reason to leave! Championing an eco-friendly approach, the campsite offers a true camper experience keeping as close to wild as possible.
If you like to take your dog on your road trip, then Caolasnacon Camping and Caravan Park should be high on your list.

Off the beaten track, and surrounded by mountain scenery, it’s just a few miles from Glencoe, on the south shore of Loch Leven and there’s plenty to explore. The loch offers fishing, boating, water-skiing and windsurfing.
Another dog-friendly stop is Mortonhall Caravan & Camping Park, just outside Edinburgh – perfect for exploring the capital. You wouldn’t think you are close to a city with it being surrounded by acres of green parkland and with great views of the Pentland Hills, Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Craggs.
And Ed’s vote for best all-rounder goes to Clachtoll Beach Campsite, in Assynt, sitting directly on the route of the North Coast 500, in a prime spot to explore the delights of Northern Scotland.
An award-winning family and pet-friendly site, it’s certainly a stop that won’t disappoint. Just 100 meters from Calchtoll beach and the picturesque Split Rock it’s guaranteed to be a memorable stay.
Offering electric and plenty of different types of pitches depending on what your desired ground and view is, there’s something for everyone.
Just five miles away, you will find the village of Lochinver, with a good variety of shops and restaurants for your stay. Certainly worth a stop if you plan on embarking on a North Coast 500 road trip.
