HOWARD – First it was Gander Mountain, then Gander Outdoors. Now the retail space at 2323 Woodman Drive will soon become a Camping World retail outlet.
The Howard Gander Mountain location closed in August of 2017 after the business declared bankruptcy. Camping World Holdings purchased Gander Mountain’s assets and began re-opening stores, 74 in total, in 2018.
The Howard location, rebranded as Gander Outdoors, opened in June before ultimately closing again.
Now, the building is being primed for a third attempt as an outdoor and camping goods store — this time with greater focus on campers and RVs as a Camping World retail outlet.
The store will sell both new and used RVs and campers, and camper accessories. It also will include service bays for repairing RVs.
“They went away from the hunting and fishing,” said Kevin Barnes, a project manager for DBS Group, the general contractor in charge of the project.
“They acquired (Gander Mountain) and it just didn’t work like they hoped,” Barnes said. “So they’re reemerging themselves, reinventing themselves.”

To make room for the campers and RVs, Barnes said, they are installing a number of overhead doors which will allow products to be displayed inside the building. They are also reworking the parking lot to accommodate LP gas filling stations and a dump station .
In total, Barnes estimated the renovation will cost roughly $2 million.
The store is expected to open in July. However, Barnes said the opening may be delayed if equipment doesn’t ship or arrive in time.
The Camping World website lists a Green Bay location as “Coming late 2022!”
