Bendigo council gives Huntly campers notice to move on

Homeless campers living at a reserve north of Bendigo’s CBD have been ordered to leave.

There around six people living at the Huntly Lions Park, in tents and caravans, because they can’t access affordable housing and say they have nowhere else to go.

The Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning (DELWP) recently re-classified the park from a camping and water supply area, to recreation only – which means camping is no longer allowed.

The campers, including Lee-Ann Gray a resident there since January,  were delivered a letter from Bendigo council officers yesterday giving them 14 days to move out.

Fiona Parker spoke with City of Greater Bendigo Director of Healthy Communities and Environments Stacy Williams, and ARC Justice CEO Damian Stock about the issues.
